Day trip from Madrid: El Escorial

The monastery at El Escorial was built on the orders of Phillip II (he’s the guy who married Mary Tudor, aka “Bloody Mary”) and was completed in 1584. We didn’t have time to get out to see it on our first trip to Madrid, so it was pretty high on our list of day trips for this go-round.
