Built in the 12th c. by what is believed to be the Orden del Santo Sepulcro (Order of the Holy Sepulchre), Iglesia de la Vera Cruz (the Church of the True Cross) once housed what is believed to be a relic of Lignum Crucis, a splinter from the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Today the Church of the True Cross belongs to the Order of Malta.

Iglesia de la Vera Cruz has a dodecagonal floor plan with three apses, centered around an edicule. Surrounding the central edicule, the nave of the temple is circular. Though it may have been used for penitentiary rites, the exact use of the edicule remains unknown. The four entrances to the edicule correspond to the cardinal points.
